About us

Greetings and welcome to Rillington History

I am Pam Smith, a local historian, retired professional genealogist, and family history tutor. My journey into the world of Rillington began in 2004, a village that captivated me during research assignments for clients. Nestled on the border of the Yorkshire Wolds, Rillington’s tranquil setting and simple way of life resonates deeply with me.

I’m a founder member of the Historical Rillington Study Group.

Over the years, I have dedicated myself to scholarly pursuits, earning the Higher Certificate and Diploma in Genealogy from the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (IHGS) in Canterbury. I then furthered my academic expertise by obtaining an Advanced Diploma in Local History from the University of Oxford. At present, I am passionately immersed in the enthralling world of heraldry at IHGS.

Beyond my academic endeavours, I am an avid explorer of historical sites and an enthusiast for nature walks. Capturing the essence of what I see through photography is a cherished pastime. Yet, what truly captivates me is the human element of history. Engaging with the residents of Rillington, delving into their stories, and seamlessly integrating them into the rich fabric of historical records is a pursuit that brings immense fulfilment.

Bibliography

Published sources and data sets are the backbone of the study however personal testimony and reminiscence are equally important together with primary sources such as diaries, biographies and newspaper reports. The following sources give perspective and context that Rillington was part of the wider community with the East Riding of Yorkshire before it was reorganised into North Yorkshire.

I am grateful for the wealth of resources that have contributed to the comprehensive understanding of Rillington’s history. These published works, records, and ephemera have not only provided valuable insights but have also allowed for a more vivid portrayal of the village and its evolution over time. Their collective contribution has been instrumental in shaping the narrative presented on this platform.
